Together We Can Heal - Reviews

This therapeutic recording surely fills a void in children's music collections; it succeeds in touching grieving children.

This soft, gentle and soothing tape will help children of all ages to reach deep into their hearts and bring up all the buried emotion. The words that accompany the songs are warm and specific and can help to clarify feelings when personal words won't come. Since children (and adults!) often have difficulty verbalizing feelings, this recording can be an excellent tool in helping them to express their grief and work through their pain in healthy and healing ways.

Together We Can Heal is beautiful music with the truth of grieving woven into its fabric that will be helpful for both children and adults. Beautiful, honest and potent. It's the first time I can remember the truth of the grieving process coming out in musical form.

What can be more comforting than soothing music that exudes hope and compassion? After listening to the words and music of Together We Can Heal, I am convinced that the producers of this work understand the human condition and how to lessen the load of the weary and the sad. As you listen with your ears, your heart will hear the message of love and hope.

Together We Can Heal is a gem, a real find. Weaving the words of grief and anguish skillfully with soothing and reflective music, this recording accomplishes what it set out to do. The words and music give the griever permission to grieve and to remember, to feel the loss, the disorientation, the anger. The recordings will prove to be a welcome aid in grief counseling as well as a comfort to those in grief.

I have not listened to music since my daughter died, but I wanted to try your recording. From the very first note, I was captured and carried along on a river of memories and pain...that I have not felt for quite awhile...It was good for me to re-visit my earlier grief that way....I have been doubting myself in a number of ways and your music and lyrics brought the truth back into clear focus. While I knew full well that you did not write the lyrics for my daughter and me, it felt like you did. You dealt so sensitively with many of the issues I have had to deal with.

The messages Together We Can Heal contains are both gentle and straightforward, a combination most of us find difficult to manage with children; especially our own. This music speaks to the many conditions of children's grief; the loneliness, the fear, the anger, the sadness. The quality of this music is unusually high. Unlike so many recordings for children, this one does not play down to them. Instead, it reaches the heights of excellence that we normally associate with serious music for adults.

Age 8 up. Steve Barta and Phil Volan's healing album deals with death and grief. The heartfelt, moving lyrics address the anger, confusion and pain children experience from the loss of a loved one. Most songs, such as "I Had A Dream", "Time To Learn" and Together We Can" are honest without being maudlin. "Tell me I'll be okay / And that I'll feel good one day / Right now I just need to cry / Just can't bear to say good-bye." Volan's soaring vocals and crystal clear delivery are similar to Michael Johnson's (Bluer Than Blue) quiet style. The accompanying acoustic guitar and piano set the mood. Two of the 12 songs are reflective instrumentals. Although the mediatative tone and subject matter are specialized, this therapeutic recording surely fills a void in children's music collections; it succeeds in touching grieving children.
